Aging Bamboo

$100 plus framing
#136
Watercolour
Carole Villeneuve
August 2014

14" x 10"

These bamboo culms were painted to represent the inner and outer beauty of aging.  As we age, we  may begin to fade on the outside (greys and yellows), but the fire inside burns strong (reds and yellows).  All going well, we maintain the memories, strength and passion of our youth (greens).
Embrace your greys and strive for a little red, yellow and green every day.

21" x 14"

This bamboo painting was inspired by a clump of
golden bamboo photographed growing
at a friend's home on the big Island of Hawaii.
The Hawaiian word for bamboo is 'Ohe.
'Ohe is said to be the body form of the Polynesian creator god Kane.

Bamboo has long been the Chinese symbol for strength.
This painting is named for the Feng Shui meaning for 3 stalks of lucky bamboo
--fu (happiness) soh (long life) and lu (wealth).
Although this bamboo is larger than lucky bamboo I see
happiness, long life and wealth in this 'Ohe.

If the colour of bamboo is seen in the vividness and individuality of each bamboo culm,
then one may easily see its hidden colours.
From the way it grows in an open and striking manner, to the authentic way
it gives of itself with its many meanings and symbols,
it is easy to see how it is worthy of our respect.
It is truly one of nature's wonders coloured with hidden delights.
