This portrayal of Crowther Memorial Junior High School (built in 1985) in Strathmore, Alberta highlights its freestanding bell.  In this painting we see someone at the open door, ready to take another step towards inspiring others to go forward.  John Quincy Adams said of a leader,
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more,
you are a leader."

Ironman

Personal Collection

#128
Watercolour
Carole Villeneuve
November 2013

10.5" x 14.5"

This painting was inspired by an Ironman competing in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in June 2013. The physical goal of completing an Ironman distance consists of
swimming 3.8 km or 2.4 miles,
cycling 180.2 km or 112 miles
and running 42.2 km or 26.2 miles
........all this with a goal of completing it under 17 hours.
The mental focus required to complete an Ironman is unmeasurable.
The Ironman in this painting
swam the distance in 1:06:21,
 cycled for 5:54:49
and ran the full marathon at the end in 4:18:59
for a total time of 11:28:29.

"Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after another."
-Walter Elliot-
If that's what perseverance is how does one describe what keeps the Ironman moving forward as he completes many long races one after another.

Standard School

October 2013

21" x 9"

This painting of Standard School was created in celebration of a leader who embodies leadership, in celebration of all she has accomplished and all she plans to accomplish.  In reflecting upon what makes her stand out as a leader the following quotes are some of those that come to mind.
"Be who you are and say what you feel
because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind."
~Dr Seuss~
A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.
~Rosalynn Carter~
A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.
~Douglas MacArthur~
"Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other."
~John F. Kennedy~

Beyond the Stars

May 2012

8" x 8"

Blasting off beyond the stars, into unknown galaxies, not simply a dream of
young children but the dream of youthful adventurers and explorers.  The future
holds mysteries that only those who dare to explore and invent can imagine.
The first known rockets are thought to have been used by the Chinese
in the 1200's, around 800 years ago.  The Saturn V rocket (1960's ) is the largest rocket ever built.   It had five rocket engines,  was taller than a thirty story
building and took the first men to the moon.

Imagine a tree house early one morning as the sun rises,
or late one afternoon as the sun sets.  Post a note on the treehouse
window, slip on your running shoes, let down the ladder, sprint down that
ladder and do a few laps around the backyard.  Back up the ladder, do a few stretches,  roll out your sleeping bag, grab a post run snack and a bottle of
water and curl up with your favourite book.

Dance With Me

Personal Collection
#89
Watercolour and Ink
Carole Villeneuve
February 2012

8" x 8"

This painting features a Eurasian Tree Sparrow ready to take
flight from a plum blossom branch.
The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is found in central Europe and eastward
to China, Korea and Japan. A few of these sparrows can be seen
around St. Louis, Missouri, where it was introduced in 1870. It never
migrated much further and remains fairly localized in the Americas.
It is also known as the German Sparrow in America to differentiate
it from the common American Tree Sparrow.  This sparrow is often depicted
in Oriental Art.  The fluttering of this bird gave rise to
a traditional Japanese dance, the Suzume Odori or Sparrow Dance.
The plum blossom is the national flower in Taiwan.  It blooms there
in the snow in late winter and survives the hard frost.  It is likened to
a stubborn person who is not afraid of hardships.
